Diabetes Mine: BrandWeek Bashes Exubera
I actually know a fellow teacher who loves Exubera and doesn't seem to mind the bong. It is hideous though.
Not everyone hates Exubera.

Nothing to do with diabetes -- but this would be good to have around the house if Marcie has another panacretis attack. It's got to be cheaper and less stressful than running her to the Vet ER.

My first post was on February 2003. Most of the time I've used Movable Type -- I tried Word Press for a few days but didn't like it as well.
It's been good to have a place to share mostly my frustrations. It is also helped my writing.
Hey, it's living with diabetes. It isn't much fun.
I'm still doing the lighter iShape workouts. Have not been able to increase steps -- we had testing last week, stress from the identity theft -- dog disappearing etc., has all conspired against me.
I did a good thing for me, I decided to sleep in and skip Marcie's runs. I woke up stiff and sore, and it was cold. I'm going to give Maggie a try and head out in a little bit.
I do need to remember to up my basals when we do testing in April.
And good news, spring break is coming up in two weeks!
And the last chores for school are coming up. Parent conferences tomorrow night and the fund raiser is next Saturday. And since it is a casino night, it will be something Rich enjoys.
I want to be able to use the Memoir with Symlin. The only reason why not? Cartridges. But there is no reason that Symlin -- who works with Lily I believe -- that it couldn't be packaged in cartridges.
Using the Memoir with Symlin would be preferable to a disposable pen since it remembers.
As my readers know, I first alerted them to the Lilly Humapen Memoir in my posting last June from the American Diabetes Association

Definately must read. Very interesting philosophys.
For patients to avoid burn out, they have to believe they can influence their own destiny, and the same is true for doctors and diabetes educators. They have to believe in the merit, indeed the essentialness, of their work. For Alan Glaseroff, as both patient and clinician, we know that’s true.

Congratulations!
The day unimagined has arrived: I am a pumper. I am woman, I wear Pod. I can't believe I haven't injected myself in 3 entire days!
I was going to leave a comment but the captcha graphic isn't loading. Unfortunately a lot of your graphics are not loading and that my be a firewall issue on my end.
For all new pumpers -- it could take several weeks before you see an improvement in A1C. The biggest improvement you'll see right away is how much easier it is to eat! Just put in your carbs, and you're about done.
I still don't get your objection to tubing, it honestly isn't a big deal. Good luck on the insurance thing.

The Charlie Weiss case and the warnings they give is one of the many reasons I've not gone for the weight loss surgery thing. I've been looking at the articles on his case, and I'm not sure he has a malpractice case and I am not sure he should be suing. You are warned going in that things can go wrong.

Did finish another week of exercise -- I think it is starting to be a habit, but there are some days I really want to skip.
Twitter is probably more trouble than it's worth, but that's okay.
We seem to be surviving the identity theft.
And the best news, is that I survived TAKS testing just fine yesterday. The organizers did a super job of making sure we were taken care of, but I would like next time that they schedule breaks later in the day, just in case.
My reliever was absolutely fantasic, and in my room exactly when she was supposed to be.
Good news for Byetta users, you can handle them just like insulin and Symlin.

Read about it on another blog -- I'm playing with it. It's at http://twitter.com/
I'm not sure what it is good for, but then I don't always get Social Networking. I am probably too old.
It happened to us this week.
First, I freely admit I am anal, as I told my students today, some people use a blowdryer, I use Chase. And some other accounts.
Every day I take a shower, every day, after the shower, I sit down with the accounts and check them. Every single one -- it's not that hard with Quicken, but I check every account that we have setup on line, including my cell phone account. Anything, anyone could tamper with.
Yesterday, a check went through for approximately $127.00 I realized pretty quickly I hadn't written a check for that amount, but waited for a day to verify it, since the image was not available.
Someone created at least three checks, with my husband's name, his DL (which even I don't have at my finger tips), my name, my DL, and our address. Of course, I don't put the DL's printed on the check. I also can't write as legible as the forger.
It's been fun. I had to close our checking account and I had to provide a list of known transactions (and darn, I should have pulled that before I left the house, I had to come back and get it).
I also put a fraud alert on our credit accounts.
My husband is happy. Everyone whose heard the story realizes that they wouldn't have caught the problem as quickly as I did, or gotten it resolved as quickly.
It pays to be anal.
I'm really getting bummed about agility. It has not been going well. I really think it's because my own physical health is not getting better. I begged my endo for help, but he didn't have any more answers my last trip in. I'm not sure what to do, other than try to increase my walking.
I've been extremely stiff, and I know a lot of that is just the cold weather we've been having. Tonight, we did most things well, but I was running very stiffly. The sad part is, Marcie is trying hard, but she just can't go any faster than I can go. And I think by the time I'm getting to Maggie's runs, I'm so tired, she can't connect with me.
The good news, is that the youngest is on closed poles now, so I am making some progress in one world.
The good news, is that the next trial is two weeks away. Everyone pray for warmer weather.
And it was not fair that it was 60 degrees today, and 40 all weekend!
More good news, I played hooky today, slept in, and then went mall walking. I didn't get enough steps in -- only 8485, but 1796 of them were aerobic.
A commenter asked if the pedometer can be used for walking in place.
I looked at the manual, and I don't think so. You are going to get some steps counted but maybe not all -- it's say the unit may not be able to count steps correctly in the following cases: and it mentions jogging and walking slowly.
Oddly enough I discovered this on my own, but I think it is more a symthom of diabetes than anything.
The authors found that there was a reduction in sleep onset latency (SOL -- the time it takes to fall asleep) by nine minutes in the group that had a high carbohydrate meal four hours before bed time.

When my blood sugar is high when I wake up, it's really hard for me to eat. Sometimes I can do eggs and bacon. Today, I just didn't feel like eating at all, and never got around to it.
Then I did an agility run. NOT good, I was dizzy, feeling hypo, etc. Didn't remember I had emergency sugar in my keychain which is in my chair pockets. I just couldn't figure out what to do. I went to the car, sat down and slowly forced down my breakfast.
Then I forgot to bolus for that, but wasn't super high. Just over 200, which I was all day yesterday.
Also, it was cold. When I woke up at 6:00 am it as 42 degrees, and when I came back from getting warm inside and out (got a warm lunch), it was 44.
Marcie and I are doing okay though. We rarely have more than one mistake, though we had two in Standard this morning. And she ran clean but I was so stiff from the cold that I was slow and we were 7 seconds over time.
Most of the time these days, we're clean but over time.
Maggie on the other hand, decided that I wasn't listening to her when she said it was too cold to do agility. She ran out of the ring. I told the people at ringside, if they would get give her food, she'd stop but they were all horrified at that idea. Probably something about rewarding the behavior I'm sure. Well, when she's in agility mode you can't pick her up -- she won't let me, and I know she won't let strangers. So I grabbed my food on the way out of the ring (we stash it handy), and got her to sit and stay while someone else got my leash (it was on the other side of the ring).
I took her comment this time, put her in the truck and took her home.
I am hoping the others will do likewise.
One of six notorious Texas prison escapees now on death row for the Christmas Eve 2000 killing of an Irving police officer is hoping to speed up his execution.
Michael Anthony Rodriguez has notified court officials that he wants to drop all appeals efforts. If a federal judge allows the move, Mr. Rodriguez would probably become the first member of the Texas Seven gang to face execution.

For those who don't know, Aubrey Hawkins, the Irving police office that was killed by them was one of my best friends. He was a really neat guy, and a really good police office.
I lost track, but I've been exercising regularly for several months. Last week I sort of switched. I've been trying to get to 10,000 steps each day with at least one aerobic session except for dog agility days.
Right now, I have averaged 10074 steps per day for the past week. I have also averaged 1648 aerobic steps. I want to increase by 10% a day, which would give me 11081 steps per day and 1812 aerobic steps per day. We'll see.
Last year, I attended the Diabetes Expo and learned about the IPort. See http://www.pattonmd.com/patientsfamily/index.php
I'm going to try a box and see if I like it.
I got an email from Patton, and they referred to EdgePark Medical Supplies to supply it. They have a website too, at http://www.edgepark.com/.
They are selling me the iPorts with no co-pay, which seems really wild. They also want to supply my testing supplies at the same no co-pay, so I said, sure, why not, since right now I'm paying the pharmacy co-pay.
It will be interesting to see how it will all work out.
And I've programmed it manually and have it on. New set, new bottle of insulin, and new cartridge and new pump. Maybe the bizarre numbers will change.
Though I do think someone spiked my diet Coke with sugar this morning. (In other words the fast food place gave me regular, not sugar free).
Got mine last night. Love them. I have to carry a Symlin vial and NO ONE makes a case for that. I'd ask them about a month ago, and they emailed to tell me they were available.
1) I wrote about a neat new protective case for Lantus vials recently. Well now a reader tipped me off to a similar one, available on eBay, apparently designed by a mother whose son wouldn't let her wrap his bottles of insulin with bubble wrap (not cool, mom! they note). This one looks pretty cool ;)
Just look for them out on ebay. They try to keep a "Buy It Now" item on there all the time and tell them in your notes what sizes you want. I got Novolog and Symlin and have a protective case for my main and my spares now. Yes, I'm anal about making sure I have plenty of supplies on me, and the few times I don't, I need them.

I dropped my pump hard Saturday. I checked it and I looked okay but I was wrong. It no longer vibrates.
I was in a semi-panic this morning shen I called nimas but they calmed me down. They shipped a new pump this evening and it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I am watching close as I don't always trust our front office. They already know it is coming though.
First, I got another week of exercise in.
Second, especially after Wednesday, I realized that the exercise program I 'm doing now, isn't entirely working.
I use iShape, which I like -- and I should ask their support this question. I either get a program that is too light -- the one I have now -- of a program that is too much -- the program I had last week. I'd like a program in between the two.
So I'm going to use that as a basis, but I'm also going to use the pedometer. I am going to shoot for 10,000 steps each day, and at the beginning getting 10 minutes of aerobic steps in. That's 10 minutes straight. I'm having trouble with that today as my shoe laces keep coming untied, and I have to restart.
My A1C is the worst it's been since I've been on the pump. 7.2. I called because I had not gotten my test results, and they did mail them on the 30th, so should get them anytime now.
I really am dumb. Okay, part of the problem is that the features of the UltraSmart and the features of the EzManager are not really fully documented.
Here's the deal. The exercise logs, the injection logs, the meal logs AND the blood sugar readings, including comments are all downloaded into the EzManger software. Also Medical information recorded on the UltraSmart come out as notes.
Better yet, if you want to keep track of things like TDD average, you can put them in the Ultra Smart and they don't show up on the EzManger log.
The LifeScan Ultra Smart is as good a companion to EzManager as is the Treo! And a great deal cheaper!
I think that can be said of all the continuous glucose monitors -- but when will it be released? I think I blogged about it during my first year.
It may not be as accurate as a blood glucose monitor, but the results can provide important information to the patient as to what is happening, when they are not checking, it will be a great motivational tool!
