Insulin still decreasing

I'm still frustrated. I'm doing 45 min cardio or 30 min cardio + personal trainer 6 days a week and still losing the same 5 pounds over and over.

HOWEVER, some good news, and hopefully some light at the tunnel. Yesterday I was at 62 units of insulin and blood sugar levels stayed at good levels all day.

I'm going down to 60 today. That's from a high of 72 units!

One of the reason I'm decreasing insulin levels, is that I am very close to hitting some lows throughout the day (and did hit one on Sunday).

It's a fine balancing act, but I'm learning it.

Another example of balancing act, was going in the gym yesterday with a blood sugar of 106 1 hour AFTER eating (and taking insulin).

I did 45 minutes of e.t. and left with a blood sugar of 107.

I did it by taking a tablet of dextrose about every 10 minutes. To be more exact, I took one at the beginning of exercise, one at 5 minutes, one at 10 minutes, and then one at every ten minute interval afterwards.

Again, fine balancing acts.

Just One More THING!

One of my friends and I have a new motto. It's "It's Just One More THING!"

So the latest (one of several, but the one most related to diabetes)....

Sharps disposal.

I have now come to the conclusion that diabetes educators don't. I was told by both sets of educators to put my needles in a sharp container and put them in the trash.

Well, DON'T. I found out the hard way.

I have NO idea what to do with them, and I'll let you know. So far the cities second solution -- take them to the local hospital is not.

I got to swim in the pool!

We have a pool. I'm STILL not sure it's a good idea. We've had it since we've had this house, about 2 years.

Anyway, I was able to get in the pool. It was cold. 78 degrees, but it was fairly warm outside and I was still hot from the gym.

I managed to get across the pool 3 times, so add that with 30 minutes of cardio, 30 minutes of resistance training. Not bad.

I still don't know what happened

I still don't know what happened yesterday, but I am going to decrease my twice a day insulin. I've been running much lower than usual all morning.

Never odd.

Hitting Low

I hit low this morning -- 40 to be exact.

I'm not sure what happened. My blood sugar was 136 before I ate breakfast. I ate a very low carb breakfast, but then I usually do. Started laundry, came upstairs to do a low, felt really dizzy, sat down at my desk and took my blood sugar and it was 68 using my arm. Took it again with my finger and it was 40.

So I ate a couple of glocose tables, then grabbed a couple juice of boxes. Sugar had gone up to 70.

Most of my supplies and literature were downstairs. I knew I didn't want to burn any sugar at all, so stayed put. Remember the Nurseline provided by my insurance company -- to get a "rebate" at the end of the year we had to fill out a survey early in the year and use the nurseline twice, so I decided to give that a try.

It worked out very well. With my husband out of town, I really wanted someone to talk to. I assume if I'd have disconnected, they would have called local emergency and sent help, since they had all my information (and verified it). Though that might be a dangerous assumption.

I never really felt in danger, but I did want some support which the nurseline provided.

I'm fine now, but man I hate that.

Freestyle by Therasense

I'm linking to myself, hope that doesn't break anything, but I wanted to make sure people who use alternative site testing saw the post on my low this morning.

I first tested on my arm and got a 68. That's alarming in itself, but within seconds later I tested my figure and got a 40. Make sure when you are testing lows, you are finger testing.

Yeah, it's a real pain, and my fingers hurt all day afterwards, but this is needed information.

And it's days like today having a data port would be nice...

This is what I'm getting fixed on Thursday

Yahoo! News - Carpal Tunnel Strikes Slowly and Steadily

I get this fixed on Thursday, I hope.

Diabetes Rant

I don't do this often, but my husband is off on a vacation trip, and a lot of people wonder why I didn't go with him.

Besides the fact, I hated Vegas the first and only time I went, and that my AP CS kids have their test on May 7th, traveling sucks.

How?

Let's say I want to spend the day shopping. I need to take:

  • Blood sugar monitoring kit and supplies

  • Fast acting insulin and supplies

  • Sugar supplies

Along with all the other stuff people take. Oh, and you can leave it in the car, I live in Texas and already it's hot enough to cook things after about 11:00 am.

But just going to work, adds it on. And some questions need to be answered -- what if something happens and I can't get home for dinner. What happens if my blood sugar monitor breaks?

So do answer those questions I end up taking:

  • blood sugar monitoring kit, and supplies

  • spare monitor, and spare supplies
(hey, in the first months my monitor stopped working, I didn't trust it and ended up in a hypoglymic emergency -- I do whatever it takes not to go there)

  • Daily dose insulin and supplies along with fast acting (they all go in the same bag

  • Emergency sugar supplies, enough for the gym and enough for a bad day

  • Mini-disc player -- I have to have my Buffet tones and a couple of different mini-disc's

  • Prescription receipts -- I keep them together with a binder clip -- comes in handy if you end up in a federal building or on a plane -- also handy if you have to get emergency treatment

So is it any wonder I don't want to go on a 1 1/2 week vacation?

April 26, 2003

Made it!

Managed to increase exercise up to 45 minutes on my cardio only days. In fact did better on my weight training days.

Monday was off school, so managed to get in 45 minutes of cardio along with the session with the personal trainer.

Tuesday got in 45 minutes all on the e.t.

Wednesday 30 + personal trainer.

Thursday 45 minutes all on e.t.

Friday have started doing something that really makes things go better. I do 10 minutes on the e.t. then two-three weight machines. I did 40 minutes yesterday total cardio yesterday as a result, but boy was I tired.

Today got in 45 minutes.

There are some added benefits, that's for sure. I've been able to reduce daily insulin to 32 units (that's from a high of 36). I still have to do some extra fast acting insulin most days to counteract lunch. That's been around 10 units though, depending on the lunch.

Unfortunately I'm still losing the same 5 pounds over and over again.

I've asked Diet Gourmet to switch me to low carb for next week to see if that will change things.

I'm going to stay at the same level of exercise for a time as the last 15 minutes can be pretty painful.

Ophra Rant...

Some day it would be nice to lose enough weight to be on Ophra.

A couple of us watched Oprah together at the gym.

I was appalled that a Porsche was given to the guy who lost 305 pounds. Yeah, it was nice of who ever sprung for it, but I bet the guy drives it for a few weeks, then has to sell it to pay the income taxes.

He can only take one family member with him at a time, and he sure can't take the dog anywhere (okay, if I am not driving to work, I'm driving to a dog thing. Being a dog mom requires more driving than being a soccer mom, especially if you like GOOD instructors). There is no where to put the crate and if it isn't safe for a small child to be in a front seat with an air bag, it sure isn't for a 24 pound beagle.

I think like I would like a Lincoln Navigator. One of the my agility classmates drives one. I told him that I was appalled with the Porsche and rather have that. I'd settle for an Aviator and a year or two of gas money. Even an Explorer.
Either would probably fit in the garage better.

And the lady who got to go to the spa? Send to Susan Garett in Canada for a week of dog agility camp. Bet it's cheaper and more exercise!

Speaking of dog agility, both Marcie and I were wired tonight, which means while I ran fast, she ran faster and almost did what I wanted.

Is Nexxium Different than Prilosec?

My hero has been ranting about drugs.

DB's Medical Rants

I'm a GERD patient, and it is frustrating to a GERD patient.

The manufacturer claims that Nexxium is different than Prilosec.

Well, my body says it is. I took Prilosec for several years. It almost worked. I tried a double dose for a while, and it worked, but Prilosec + Propulsid worked better. I will probablye forever rue the end of Propulsid (and I'm probably spelling it wrong), but it worked for me.

I went to a double dose of Nexxium for a while. It worked for quite a time, and it stopped with the insulin weight gain.

Now I am on Protonix it. It's working better than the double Nexxium did over the past few months.

The good news, for the insurance company, is that I'm on a regular dose with it.

Hopefully I'll lose the weight before it stops working.

I'm really really trying...

This has been a tough week!

It's the end of the six weeks, we've got state testing next week, so life is weird.

I've still managed my new exercise schedule though -- and have been able to do a full 45 minutes on the elliptical trainer.

Was watching Ophrah this afternoon, she did another weight loss thing.

If I ever lose all this weight, I want a Lincoln Navigator, and I want a CD with that Jazz tune. I would settle for an Aviator though. I think the Porsche was a complete waste, but then it wasn't my dream.

I would rather go to a dog camp than a spam, but do have a human massage therapist on staff, along with the doggy ones. It would be agility only and I would be happy with that.

Yes, they have dog camps and they have camps for training agility only. I'd most like Susan Garrett's camp, I think but would settle for Clean Run, but someone has to spring for a sub.

A quick brag...

While I'm having a bit of trouble getting used to the new insulin....

I went to the gym this afternoon, and blood sugar started out at 115. 45 minutes later of eliptical trainer, I was at 110. How did I do that?

Covered the exercise with dextrose tablets.

I am very proud that I kept it on an even keel.

Humalog and Novolog Insulins

Ask Questions!

[object]

The moral of the story is to ASK questions.

First, I'm delaying surgery, and going for the steriod injection. Doctor wants me to go that route.

But here's the surprising part. He's had me on Humalin R to adjust my blood sugar. I've been reading, especially Diabetic Solutions, which wanted patients to use a faster asking insulin.

Come to find out, my doctor didn't know he could prescribe it! When I asked about it today -- it's the first time that I haven't had more pressing matters, he said, that's a really good idea, i'll have to look it up -- he did, and I have it now.

Only problem is that it looks exactly like the 75/25 mix pen. I'm going to email Lilley and suggest they go with a different colored cap, or at least make them available.

What I have done, is take a sharpie and mark the cap with my sliding scale. I have also marked it with date, since I probably won't use a full pen in a month.

So you just have to ask questions.

Also, we're switching from Nexxium to Protonix, since ever since I gained the insulin weight I've been having trouble with gastric reflux again.

Claritin more expensive

Yahoo! News - Claritin More Expensive for Those Insured

One of my students came to me complaining about this last week.

Actually I saw the handwriting on the wall when my insurance company last year switched my Allegra to Claritin. I was a bit upset, because it had been determined two years ago that Claritin was contributing to my high blood pressure. Fortunately Zyrtec is working well.

Yesterday was just weird

I think part of it was what I ate. I went fairly high carb. Sometimes I just get cravings and they make me nuts.

Ended up having to inject a couple of times, but blood sugar is back to what I am used to seeing.

Managed to get in 6 days of exericse.

3 resistance trainer + 30 cardio.

Weird Day

This has been a REALLY weird day. Blood sugar was very high twice, once when working out, which is very unusual for me.

I have been losing weight though, this week, so that is good.

April 17, 2003

A good article

Why is my morning bg high? What are dawn phenomenon, rebound, and Somogyi effect?

I think I am having trouble with dawn phenomenon.

I've had several nights when I have gone to bed about an hour after eating, and my blood sugar has been between 150-170. it's not good for me to go to bed that soon after eating, but I try to keep it low volume -- Glucerna shake, etc -- since I have GERD. I wake up with blood sugar in the 100-120 range.

If I go to bed low, in the 120 range, I wake up with blood sugar in the 140-160 range. Usually after I take insulin and eat breakfast, two hours later, I'm back in the 90-110 range.

I need to really work on this, and is one of my plans.

Diabetes is WEIRD!

I've been on a reduced (by two units a day) dosage of insulin since Monday.

Today is a good example. My blood sugar has been as low as 114, and as high as 342. All in one day.

I haven't taken any extra insulin though. I was at the gym, and getting ready to workout when the blood sugar was at 342. After 40 minutes on the elliptical trainer, it was down to 150 and still dropping. By the time I got to agility and did an hour class (two hours later, and some exercise, but not much), I was at 114. Wild....

Sorry to see this happen

Diet doctor Robert Atkins dies

I'm sorry to see him go...

My sister, who does not have my health problems, lost a substantial amount of weight, and still eats this way. One of my coworkers and her husband are also doing well.

I do better on the Bernstein plan that limits protein and fat also, and is geared more towards diabetics.

Measuring glucose with tears?

Can't find a story on the internet on this anywhere, but this morning Paul Harvey mentioned that someone had found a way to measure blood glucose by using tears.

If you see anything on this, put it in the comments.

The controllable part always worries me.

I always feel badly for the Type 1's, and the other people who get diabetes from an unknown cause.

Yes, I freely admit that my behavior is probably the main reason I have diabetes.

I could blame it on my doctor's for not getting more in my face, but let's face it, I was warned for years, and I ignored it.

But what about the Type 1's? Very young children get diabetes. Not because of behavior, and in fact, we really don't know why they get diabetes. They have to live a life of daily blood sticks, injections, and/or the pump.

The more diabetes is dismissed as controllable, the less effort and money spent on research.

Every time I see one of these studies, I wonder who they are trying to help?

Of course, if you keep reading, you find that maybe it isn't that great of a study after all.

Besides, I'm in Dallas, and drive by it quite abit, so the Cooper people have to be right! (FYI: the high school I teach at is very close to Cooper, but I dont' make enough to go there, plus my gym is more convenient and FUN!)

Fun week at the gym!

They are having an easter egg hunt all week. So far, I've found three eggs -- which got me two t-shirts and a personal trainer session.

Also made a goal.

I have been losing the same 5 pounds for a while now, so I dropped my insulin a unit and am increasing the amount of exercise by 5 minutes on the days I don't do the personal trainer thing. Managed the 40 minutes today.

I'm also watching carbs very close and dropping them as much as I can.

Cross your fingers....

It's getting better...

Life has been frustrating lately.

I've been losing the same five pounds over and over again. The good news, is that two of those pounds appear to be gone now (since I tend to lose during the week, and gain or not lose on the weekend, I tend to let Monday be my weight day).

Also, my blood sugar today is running a good 30-40 points lower than usual.

I'm really hoping I can reduce my insulin dosage. I was hoping to last week ,but since I was staying so tired, my blood sugar was too high.

Met a major goal

I'm a dog trainer -- I've done it for a living, but mostly as a hobby. Today I had a major accomplishment.

My beagle took a first place in agility -- Open Preferred 12". I'm as proud of this as any other accomplishment.

Agility courses are very long for me. I have trouble in class even standing and waiting my turn -- and usually take a chair with me. My dog is very well trained, but doesn't do well because I can't run.

That's a shame, and frustrating for us.

But today, she took a first place and did it in 59.99 seconds. That was faster than any of the other dogs in the regular 12" class (we ran Open Preferred 12" which is for old slow dogs or old slow handlers -- we get 5 extra seconds which we didn't need). It was also faster than the 16" class, and jump height doesn't bother Marcie.

There are pictures of her on my personal page at http://www.augustweb.com/~kathleen -- see "my dogs".

The part about being diabetic, and being overweight, and being this out of shape bothers me because it makes her look bad, and it makes my training ability look bad.

It was nice to make her look good today. And yeah, she sniffs on the course, but man does she move fast when she does it.

Exercise goals

I met most of my exercise goals this week. I only got in two sessions of resistance training, but not bad with the kind of week it ended up being.

I am going to try to go to 40 minutes on the days I don't do resistance training, but I'm not going to push it.

My biggest goal this week is to get untired. I'm finally feeling better today.

Still haven't decided on the surgery, but will see my primary care physician next Monday (or before), to discuss it with him and have the pre-op tests scheduled.

The hands do not bother me, as long as I remember to wear my splints, but I still can't wear my rings without pain.

April 12, 2003

Argh!

I think I have a problem. Got home from the agility trial and just felt like I had to do one more thing. Besides, my blood sugar had been high all day (baked potatos, even small ones, are not a good idea, by the way).

So I called around, picked a 24-hour fitness somewhat near the house (not close enough to ever join), and did 35 minutes on the ellipical trainer. (Note to self: get a lock)

Still Tired

I was going to go to the gym this morning, and just couldn't get moving. Big dog and I have agility trial all weekend. I've been there 5 days this week, and worked with the personal trainer two fo those so I'm doing good.

My focus right now is to get untired.

Also have gotten to the gym everyday so far, and made appointment with the private trainer for tomorrow, so doing well on that.

Traveling to Mexico from Ken

This is from Ken Purchell ... one of my frequent comments.

Good tips!

A guide to traveling and dining in Cancun, Mexico for the Diabetic.

Eating out while away from home is difficult when you are diabetic but doing
so in another country is even more so. There are not many resources
available to guide you except your food knowledge and portion estimation
skills.

First, prepare for travel stress! If you make small plans they can pay off
big in your stress level and keeping a handle on your blood sugar. Take
appropriate snacks and beverages on the plane with you.

Once in Cancun, remain cool. The area for customs is getting better every
year but the air conditioning is not always working at its best. Dress for
the beach unless you’re coming from Vancouver or similar climate. A good tip
is to fill in the temporary visas while on the plane; you will not a have a
convenient place to do so once you arrive. Gather your bags and head for
the stop light. They use a random system to inspect bags, I hope you get a
green light, we didn’t this trip. Ground transportation from the airport is
limited to three types: Tourist style bus – this is the cheapest option but
not work the hassle of stopping at every hotel along the way $5-$8 per
person, Multi-passenger van – good option but still too many stops for my
tastes $7-$9 per person, Suburban – best option to get to your hotel or
condo quickly and not that much more expensive $8-$10 per person. Avoid all
the tours and condo hucksters.

Ok, you’re finally in your condo or hotel and hungry. What’s to eat? There
are now all the familiar restaurant chains in Cancun but why eat there. You
traveled to Mexico so that it is different from home, right? There are many
fine restaurants in Mexico to sample. Some of our long time favorites are:
Carlos and Charlie's (loud and great ribs), Lorenzillo's (Seafood), La
Habuchela (Mayan Garden, downtown). A good local restaurant guide is by Dos
Gringos a husband wife team that has menus from many of the long standing
restaurants. For info: http://www.cancunmenus.com/aboutus.html.

My favorite dishes for a diabetic are: (even before being diagnosed)

Tikin Zic – Grouper filets served in banana leaves with tomatoes, onions,
poblano chile strips. This is very similar to Veracruz style but without
the green olives. The whole package is then grilled over charcoal giving a
subtle smoky flavor that lightly permeates through the banana leaves. Served
with Mexican rice, black beans.

Tampiquena Steak - Marinated skirt steak chargrilled and served topped with
cheese, served with Mexican rice, black beans, guacamole and usually rags
(grilled strips of onions and poblano peppers).

Chiles Rellenos de Mariscos - Green poblano peppers stuffed with shellfish
and covered with a red-brown sauce containing orange, tomato, puréed mild
chile. Usual sides of rice and black beans.

Remember to use that sunscreen and return safe!

Long-Term Pharmacotherapy for Obesity Brings Small Overall Weight Loss

Interesting. They are claiming the weight loss drugs do not work.

Long-Term Pharmacotherapy for Obesity Brings Small Overall Weight Loss

Personally I have distrusted them. I even tried Redux for a few days, but saw no change.

Dilemma

I have a dilemma and I am accepting advice on this.

Went to see a surgeon today about Carpel Tunnel Release. He said that he is very successful with normal patients, but has a 50% success rate with diabetic patients. He said he didn't know why, and he said that he had not made anyone worse.

Should I get the surgery? He suggests getting the worse hand done, then waiting until it was completely healed to do the second.

I hurt, the activities that bother me the most include driving, using the ellipticall trainer at the gym, and writing. I can avoid the last two, but I really like the calorie burn on the e.t.

So far, husband wouldn't. Mom doesn't know, and lady I really respect at gym says she doesn't know either.

I hate the time change

I did get a nap when I got home yesterday. And did get to the gym around 7:00 and got 35 minutes in on the ellipitcal trainer.

I see surgeon today about carpel tunnel surgery.

April 7, 2003

So now I am exhausted

And I'm not sure how to handle it. I have two more classes, a meeting and the appointment with the personal trainer.

I know I am going to sleep after the personal trainer. I am thinking of canceling it.

----

And I did. I am planning on taking a good long nap as soon as I get home.

Don't get TIRED!

This is really a note to myself....

I got too tired on Sunday, and I should have just gone to bed, but I had so many things I thought I needed to do.

The consequence -- I just kept eating and eating.

The good news:

I kept to protein and fat so my blood sugar wasn't affected immediately -- that makes it even worse.

Today I don't feel like eating at all. In fact, I couldn't eat breakfast, and did a Glucerna meal replacement bar.

Still haven't decided about exercise. I've got to go to a staff meeting after school today, though I do have an appointment with the personal trainer at 6:00.

I have a appointment with doctor on Tuesday, and I'm not planning much until I have talked with him.

So right now, I'm thinking of sticking to close to last week. At least 5 days of exercise. 30 minutes + resistance training or 35 minutes. And giving myself permission to have a day off other than Sunday.

Why you Binge Eat

I don't know -- I'm finding I do it when I'm exhausted.

Why people binge eat.

April 6, 2003

Staying an extra day was a good plan

First, there were major storms in my neighborhood last night, and tornado warnings went off twice. So my husband emailed me and told me he was glad I didn't come home yesterday (yes, I am taking that the right way).

I slept very well. Woke up once and I am willing to bed it was when the bill was put under my door. Woke up my usual time.

I feel MUCH better today than I have any day this weekend. This trip has gone exceptional well.

Somethings I'll do next time: bring ice packs, though my food did stay cold yesterday at the workshop.

I'm home!

Everything went very well. Very glad to be home, and especially to get beagle kisses and hugs.

April 5, 2003

Might be time to decrease insulin again...

My blood sugar is staying very low all day. I'm going to keep a real close eye over the next few days, and am seriously considering reducing the amount of insulin I take.

The good news, is that I didn't get on the roller coaster when I hit low this morning!

Doing Good

Have slept better than I usually do in a hotel situation. Planning on grabbing breakfast here at the hotel at 7:00, then going by 24-Fitness on the way to the workshop. (Hotel gave me a free pass), then to the workshop.

My trip

Keeping the hotel room for another night was a really good idea. I'm exhausted.

Interesting day. The hotel gave me a pass for 24-Hour Fitness.

So I got up, and went down to breakfast right before seven. Homewood Suites does a great breakfast, and they had scrambled eggs and sausage. (Lots of carb choices which I avoided).

Then got to 24-hour Fitness. They were nice enough, but are REAL stingy on the towels. You have to get them from the front desk and they only want to give out one at a time. Their equipment is great and they had the same elliptical trainer I use. The best thing is that I met this weeks goal. I am going to have to think hard about next week, because of my schedule.

I didn't do enough Glucose tablets while I was working out. My blood sugar hit 70 (by my arm, so it was lower), and I had started getting the shakes. I ate a big sugar pill and that helped, but ended up eating both a Glucerna bar and a scone in the morning to stablize things. BS was 115 in the early afternoon!

Workshop was great. As I figured, their breakfast wasn't a good idea for me, but they did great on lunch -- Jason's Deli. I'm glad I brought my own though because they didn't break for lunch until 12:30 and I really need to eat around 11:30. Noon pushes it.

I'm really glad I don't have to drive home tonight and have a comfortable bed and room to sleep in.

I'm 5 for 5 now...

Got to the gym this morning....

One secret to the treadmill -- the RIGHT music. (Okay it was an ellipical trainer but the theory is the same.

Getting ready for the trip. Very close to packed. Got my food, got my cooler set up. Stopped and took a couple hour break at the gym.

As usual, (before a new event) I could not sleep last night. BUT the conference is in the morning, so saved the sleeping pills for tonight.

Got here!

I got to Austin about 5:30 -- not a good time, and missed my exit, but finally got to the hotel.

Homewood Suites is NICE. Nice room, definately a suite -- which I need with my sleeping disorders. Cheap too -- $89.99 a night -- which is a spring special. I am definately staying tomorrow.

Bad news, the best connection I can get is 26?! I go to Metrowerks tomorrow and I expect decent access there.

Hotel has a nice fitness room -- treadmill and bike. TV. They also gave me a pass to 24-hour fitness. I'll have to see where they are at and what their hours are. Though I figure treadmill here is good enough.

Room even has a VCR. And full kitchen with pots, pans, plates, silverware and disherwasher. Only thing it doesn't have is a full oven but does have a toast over. They leave coffee, tea popcorn and two bottles of water in the room too. And have a little convenience store downstairs. You can leave a shopping list and you are supposed to have what you ordered in the room in the afternoon.

Cooler worked fine, brought extra insulin and brought my food.

A quick brag on big dog

"Big dog" -- (Marcie) -- is a beagle. Most people think of beagles are very stubborn dogs. Many of them are quite aloof.

Marcie wants to be one of those aloof dogs. Unfortunately she is owned by someone who has trained a bunch of really outgoing "demo" dogs, so she doesn't get that chance. She has learned that people have food and if you are really cute and do tricks, people give you food. In fact, she does everything but agility for food. Food is a bonus, of course, for agility, but the real reward for agility is getting to run fast, and stand on really tall obstacles. Okay, it all really means food somehow. But she has run agility when there was rabbits on the course, and she'd didn't stop to look at the rabbit. (She is field breed and from excellant stock).

She's really funny, because she doesn't fawn on me, and she really even doesn't spend that much time in the same room with me. She's usually in my bed, or in my chair, while I'm here in the computer room. If I'm downstairs, she's in the people yard, or she's on a stair on the stair case.

When we run agility, she really doesn't look like she is paying attention to me. It often looks likes she isn't paying attention at all to me when we run a course (and sometimes she doesn't), but she started doing something really odd, that my first agility instructor caught. This was back when I had untreated GERD, which caused asthma like symthoms. She would completely stop running the course. She would go off and sniff, she would go off and eliminate, so do some other behavior that made me stop.

I have never really encouraged the behavior. When it happens I am too busy weezing, coughing, and trying to catch my breath to do anything about it.

Tonight, she pulled the ultimate. It was actually pretty cool. We'd done a really nice run, she was using her border collie beagle personality. (My first instructor once said that Marcie had at least 10 different personalities, and we never know which one she is wearing -- and that is as good an explaination as any).

We did miss one obstacle and it was mom's fault. Too many years of police dog training -- when the instructor tells me to do something I do it. I tried repeating part of the run. We did get past the difficult part and accomplished what we wanted...but in the middle of the run, Marcie went over to the table and stopped. I tried to get her to go on, but she hopped back on the table. Third time, I listened, walked off the course, praised her and handed her a mouthful of hot dog.

I really think she is going to do something when my blood sugar gets to low. I am too chicken right now to force it to happen and actually train it.

One of her cute things -- she leaves the room if I give myself a shot. It really bothers her.

Why I work so hard on this

I am around a few people who are diabetics who don't work at hard at diabetes as I do.

So why do I?

First my dad died a slow death (it took three years), which was probably painful, and was certainly frustrating. It all started with a diagnosis of diabetes. Watching him die was not fun. I remember good times during those three years, but most of them were pretty bad.

Second, I am very sensitive to blood sugar variations. I have never really enjoyed alcohol, and never thought about doing drugs because I really dislike any impairment of brain function. I also dislike any impairment of vision -- I drive my eye doctors nuts, because I have always been corrected to 20/10, even though they were aiming for 20/20 and these days I'm lucky to get 20/30.

Blood sugar variations do these things to me.

When my blood sugar starts getting near 150 I start getting a bit loggy. I notice that memory is slower, and I have a little difficulty with solving complex computer programming tasks. At around 180, my vision starts blurring and solving computer programming tasks become even harder. I am a nasty, evil human being when the blood sugar goes over 250. Good news/bad new sort of thing, I can't see who I am being evil and nasty too.

Too low isn't much better, with the added benefit of knowing that it will kill me faster than too high .

I am starting to feel better. I still feel old and decrepit but I don't feel quite as old and decrepit.

I think I'm obsessed...

My husband and the people at the gym think it is a good thing though...

I have been busy trying to get ready for my trip to Austin. Had to do some mandatory training at school, which put me 45 minutes behind on my usual day, etc... so I decided this afternoon that skipping the gym today, and doing 35 minutes at the treadmill tomorrow evening at the hotel would be okay.

Well at 5:45, I looked at the clock and realized that if I grabbed dog and treat, I could get 35 minutes done on the treadmill, and could get to dog class.

So I did.

The good news, is that I have met me goal so far this week and have only two days to go.

Good article on sleep deprivation and what it does to you.

Exercise

The exercise thing is going well so far this week.

I am enjoying working with Tricia. She lets me do my workout on an exercise ball, which is good for my back. Also makes me giggle when I lose my balance.

I've won two contests at the club. I really like the long running contest the best. Starting in January, those in the contest are on a punch card system. You get a punch every time you work out, and then every quarter they have a drawing for several prizes.

I had accumulated 8 cards (with 8 punches) a piece. And yeah, I won a candle, and it's nice, but what was REALLY nice was seeing the stack of 8 cards and knowing I'd been in that many times!

We've started a new color this quarter, so it will be nice to see the next stack of cards.

The other contest went for 2 weeks, and we accumulated points. That was one reason I was doing the 60 minutes of cardio a day during spring break. I won a $25.00 gift certificate for that one, which I am applying towards a block of personal training.

I am a bit afraid to get a block of personal training. Seems my other trainers changed jobs in the middle of my last block with them.

Using a New Email service

David Coursey of Anchor Desk recommends, so it has to be good.

mailblocks: home page - say goodbye to spam

David is an OLD friend of mine. Haven't seen him in years but I do really enjoy his column.

This is a neat service, I am enjoying it. They need some work on their user interface, especially creating email, which they acknowledge.

It is FAST, it works will with Outlook Express -- I can't stand Eudora, but I assume works well with it. Does work with my email Client at all, but they had just started on IMAP support when they dropped the product.

Cooler

Ken -- you brought up a good point about taking stuff. That's one reason I picked the hotel I did -- okay, Metrowerks (putting on the seminar), picked the hotel, but it's the type I like.

But first things first -- the gadget.

I have the coolest cooler It's pretty good sized. Holds lots of food, and the best part, NO WASTED SPACE FOR ICE! It plugs into the car and stays cold. Even better, it came with an adapter that lets me plug it in into the wall and keep things cold.

It doesn't chill -- you need to make sure that the items are cold before you put them in, but it does keep them at a good refrigerated temperature.

The other good thing about the cooler, is that I can take spare insulin and not have to worry about it going bad.

I got mine about 3 years ago at Walmart. It came with both the car and wall adapter, but usually they only come with the one. And the wall adapters can be expensive. You are also supposed to be able to hook it up to a car battery for camping.

I'm planning on taking my regular meals and some snack items. Glucerna works very well for me. Rabbit food doesn't. The good news, is that if I really need something to much on, all the major fast food restaurants have salads, which I am good at doing.

Also, your average BBQ restaurant is good if you get meat, no sauce, and green beans.

The hotel I am staying at is a suite hotel with a kitchenette and a seperate bedroom. I stayed at an Embassy suites several years ago for a week long conference and it was super. Did the same thing that time -- brought my food with me, and had some snack items too.

Another new glucose monitoring system coming out

They are working hard at getting rid of finger sticks. This one is implantable (sounds similar to the Therasense product that should be out sometime after June.

Sleep Apnea and Heart Failure

Somehow years ago, I got on a doctor's mailing list -- Medscape Don't know if none doctor's can get it now, but it's good, even if I can usually understand only the first paragraph or two of each story.

This came across today.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) improves heart failure in patients with coexistent obstructive sleep apnea, according to the results of a small randomized trial published in the March 27 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The investigators suggest that many would benefit from this, because this condition may coexist in up to one-third of patients with stable heart failure. With the advent of less expensive, more readily available screening for obstructive sleep apnea, screening may become routine for patients with heart failure.

The problem with sleep apnea, is that it requires a sleep test to screen for. Sleep tests require at least two people to monitor the patient, plus a ton of equipment. I think mine ran $7000 a few years ago. Needless to say, this is something you don't do on a whim.

Too bad there isn't a cheaper way to diagnose and treat sleep apnea.

And never let anyone talk you out of a sleep study if you think you might need one. Going through that has made a huge difference.
